Even though the government has lifted the restrictions on football activities, the new NPFL season will not begin until several conditions are met, officials said.
Permanent secretary of the sports ministry, Gabriel Aduda, disclosed that full compliance to Covid-19 measures must be ensured before the government will approve the resumption of football matches.
He also said that clubs must also adhere to the regulations and licensing requirements before the NPFL will begin.
“The domestic league will not commence until the regulations and controls in the aspect of financial and licensing control are put in place,” maintained Aduda.
“The NFF must put clubs on notice and enforce these regulations and controls as stipulated, otherwise the Nigerian Professional and amateur leagues would not be approved for resumption.”
Most NPFL clubs owe players several months’ pay and match venues remain sub-standard.
The NFF have proposed the NPFL to kick off between September and October.
