Awoniyi scored the decisive fifth kick in the penalty shootout to send Forest to the fifth round of the cup competition at the expense of Bristol City.
Full time and extra time stood at 1-1 in this replay before Forest won the penalty shootout 5-4.
Awoniyi has shown top form since his return from a groin injury that needed surgery.
