Awoniyi reacted quickest when his first effort came off the post to put away the rebound for the match winner in the 55th minute.
He did not celebrate his goal in respect of his former employers.
“It was an emotional game for me,” he said.
“I am always looking forward to playing against Liverpool after they signed me when I was 18 and I am very happy to have scored against them.”
He was also the match winner against West Ham and it was Forest only second win of the campaign.
Today’s loss was the third for Liverpool this season.
Forest have again moved off the foot of the table with nine points, a point ahead of Leicester City.
He said Forest must keep pushing for safety.
“We stick together as a family, we thank the fans (for their support) and we just have to keep on going,” he said.
