Akpom, who was signed by the Dutch giants from English Championship side Middlesbrough this summer, doubled Ajax advantage a minute to full time for his first goal for the Dutch giants.
It was a decent header off a corner.
The goal and the win will come as a huge relief for the former Arsenal ace, who has pledged his international allegiance to the Super Eagles of Nigeria after he has represented England at age-grade levels.
Ajax have endured their worst ever start to a season, which has already accounted for one coach.
This win over fellow relegation battlers Volendam has moved them out of relegation to 15th on the table.
It was their first victory since August.
