Cyriel Dessers himself has admitted he could have done more after he was selected by Genk to start ahead of fellow Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu.
Genk splashed four million Euros to sign Dessers last summer, but he has had to play second fiddle to Onuachu, who is the leading scorer in the Belgian top flight league with 24 goals thus far.
However, the striker was handed a rare start, while Onuachu was rested in a Belgium Cup quarterfinal against KV Mechelen Thursday night and he responded by providing two assists as Genk zoomed into the semifinal 4-1.
“I played a good game, but I can do even better,” Dessers said after the game.
“It has indeed been a while since I was allowed to start a game.
“This was an important game, so there was a bit of pressure. It was very nice that we were there immediately.
“I am proud how we did this as a team, especially in the first 20 minutes. We had a clear plan, and we carried it out perfectly today. It looked very fresh, so we are a difficult team for many teams.
“In Belgium you just have to work hard in every game. Only living on talent is not enough, maybe we’ve done that too much in recent weeks.”
Dessers has scored four goals in the league thus far.
