How Pre-Season Form Is Shaping Early Expectations

Pre-season results come with an obvious warning: there are no league points at stake. Teams rotate heavily, new signings are still learning systems and players return from summer tournaments at different stages of fitness. Even so, results influence the mood around a club before the first competitive match.

That has been particularly noticeable ahead of 2026/27. Arsenal have mixed a convincing win with two defeats, while Manchester City have looked more settled. Those impressions can also filter into early football markets, including those followed through mobile betting, although a July or August friendly provides far less reliable evidence than competitive form. The useful information often lies behind the score: line-ups, minutes, tactical experiments and how new players are being used.

Arsenal score four, then lose twice

Arsenal entered pre-season as defending Premier League champions, so even their friendlies have attracted greater scrutiny.

A 4-1 victory over Girona initially provided plenty of encouragement. The attack looked fluid and goals came from several players, suggesting that Arsenal had retained much of the variety that helped them win the league.

The next two results changed the tone. A 3-1 defeat to Real Betis in Dublin was followed by a 3-2 home loss to Borussia Dortmund. Five goals conceded across those matches inevitably shifted attention towards the defence.

There is context. Arsenal were missing important centre-backs, and pre-season defensive combinations rarely resemble those used once competitive football begins. Players are also returning from a demanding World Cup summer, making workload management more important than maintaining a settled eleven throughout every friendly.

Still, repeated defensive errors are harder to dismiss than a single poor result. Arsenal’s quality and squad depth remain obvious, but the defeats have created a question that the Community Shield against Manchester City can begin to answer: were the problems simply a consequence of preparation, or is the defensive structure still short of its usual level?

Manchester City have produced the cleaner preparation

City’s results have created a different impression. A draw with Inter Milan in Hong Kong was followed by convincing victories over the K-League All-Stars and Atlético Madrid in Seoul.

More important than the unbeaten sequence has been the way City have controlled periods of matches and created chances. Antoine Semenyo and Omar Marmoush have been among the attacking players attracting attention, giving the side different options in the final third.

Pre-season is particularly useful for assessing new attacking combinations because the score alone does not explain much. How frequently players receive the ball in dangerous areas, where they start attacks and who occupies central positions can reveal more about the plans for the season.

For City, the early evidence points towards a squad that is finding its rhythm without major

disruption. That does not make them favourites in every competitive fixture, but it provides a calmer backdrop than Arsenal’s two consecutive defeats.

Liverpool and United have been harder to read

Elsewhere in England, the signals are much less clear.

Liverpool have beaten Sunderland and Wrexham, but defeats against Leeds and Monaco have produced an uneven set of results. That fits a side still working through a period of transition rather than one offering an obvious indication of where it stands.

Manchester United have similarly combined promising spells with inconsistency against different types of opposition. In both cases, individual performances and tactical choices may currently be more informative than the overall win-loss record.

Real Madrid have taken a more measured approach. The Spanish side has concentrated on integrating new arrivals and building fitness without producing especially dramatic results. That can be perfectly acceptable in pre-season. A club does not need to dominate friendlies if the players are accumulating the right minutes and adapting to tactical changes.

Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, can take encouragement from beating Arsenal 3-2. A strong result against the English champions provides a useful confidence boost even if its competitive significance remains limited.

Which pre-season signals are actually worth following?

Not all friendly results deserve the same weight. A team losing after replacing eight players at half-time tells a different story from one fielding something close to its strongest eleven and being comprehensively outplayed.

The more useful indicators include:

  • minutes given to likely starters, particularly players returning from the World Cup;
  • roles of new signings and whether they already appear comfortable in the system;
  • chance creation, rather than goals alone;
  • repeated defensive mistakes across several matches;
  • changes in formation or pressing structure that could continue into competitive games.

These factors help explain why Arsenal’s recent defensive problems attract attention despite the limited importance of friendly scores. Two defeats do not suddenly make the champions a poor side, but recurring problems are still worth monitoring.

Friendlies can move expectations faster than they should

Pre-season has an unusual effect on football discussion. There is little hard evidence available for the new campaign, so every visible performance receives disproportionate attention.

The same caution is useful when looking at betting markets. A striker scoring three times in friendlies may have improved fitness or a larger role, but the goals do not automatically make his competitive scoring probability dramatically higher. Similarly, a club conceding several times while experimenting with its defence may look weaker than it actually is.

Markets for match winners, total goals and individual scorers can respond as more information becomes available. Confirmed starting elevens and competitive team news generally provide stronger evidence than isolated friendly results.

The distinction also matters when moving between different parts of an online platform. Sports markets and casino games are separate products with different mechanics; neither changes the basic problem with interpreting pre-season football. Limited competitive data makes assumptions easier to form and harder to verify.

The Community Shield should tell us more

The next stage provides better evidence. Arsenal’s Community Shield meeting with Manchester City carries a different level of intensity from a friendly and should involve line-ups much closer to those expected in the Premier League.

For Arsenal, it is an opportunity to show that the five goals conceded against Betis and Dortmund were largely a pre-season issue. For City, it offers a chance to test their encouraging preparation against the defending champions.

After that, the first league rounds will quickly make many summer narratives irrelevant. Liverpool and Manchester United may look completely different once competitive line-ups settle, while Real Madrid’s quieter preparation could prove more useful than spectacular friendly victories.

Pre-season form matters, but mostly because it provides the first incomplete picture of what teams are trying to become. Arsenal’s 4-1, 1-3 and 2-3 results have raised defensive questions; City’s performances in Asia have created greater confidence. The real test begins when experiments end and dropped points start appearing in the table.
