Super Eagles captain William Ekong looks set to keep his Starting XI place for today’s decisive 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin in Uyo.
The experienced central defender may not have been at his best in recent games for Nigeria, but going by the team’s final training Monday, he will again play alongside Calvin Bassey in the heart of the Super Eagles back-four.
His experience and his leadership qualities have ensured he starts this game from the first whistle.
In September, he was partly to blame for the stoppage time equaliser by Zimbabwe in Uyo and last month he gifted South Africa an own goal in Bloemfontein.
On Friday, he was slow and ponderous against little Lesotho.
