Defending champions Remo Stars dominated but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with visiting Rivers United on the opening day of the new NPFL season.
Playing in their new home ground of the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Remo Stars fell behind after only three minutes of action when former Flying Eagles star Aniekeme Okon got last season’s runners-up Rivers United off to a dream start with the opening goal via a header.
However, the home responded quickly when striker Victor Mbaoma hit target six minutes later on his return to the club.
Rivers United were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when defender Temple Emekayi was sent off for dangerous play.
Remo Stars started captain Nduka Junior, Michael Tochukwu and Olamilekan Adedayo fresh the on-going CHAN in East Africa.
Nine other NPFL matches will be played across the country later today.
