Bullish captain Daniel Bameyi has vowed the Flying Eagles will successfully defend their WAFU U20 Cup against arch-rivals Ghana tomorrow night in Lome, Togo.
The Flying Eagles showed great character to come from behind to beat Niger 3-1 and reach a second straight sub-regional final.
Ghana, under coach Desmond Ofei who led them to Africa Games Gold in March on home soil, stopped Cote d’Ivoire in their own semifinal 2-1 to set up another Jollof Derby.
Both Nigeria and Ghana have thus qualified for the 2025 U20 AFCON in South Africa in January.
What is now left is the little matter of who will be crowned as the best U20 team in WAFU B.
Bameyi, who featured at the 2022 WAFU tournament in Niger, said the Flying Eagles are fired up to bring home the trophy again.
“We’re delighted to be in the final again, so there’s one more dance to dance,” said the Bayelsa United central defender.
“We need the cup, we need the cup more than Ghana and we will give our very best to bring it home again.”
Bameyi’s confidence has been boosted by the fact that the Flying Eagles attack is now firing.
After they fired blanks in an opening day loss to Burkina Faso, the Nigeria U20s have scored five goals in their last two matches including three from Enyimba winger Clinton Jephta, who was named Man of the Match in the semifinal vs Niger.
