Michael Essien, who applied to be Super Eagles coach but later claimed he rejected an offer to be an assistant coach in the team, has led the USA U20 team to an emphatic 4-0 win over Cuba in the 2024 CONCACAF U20 Championship.
With the big win, the USA punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2024 CONCACAF U20 Championship, which also serves as a qualifier for next year’s U20 FIFA World Cup.
They will now play for top spot in Group A when they face Costa Rica in Thursday’s final group game.
Ethan Kohler finished a Niko Tsakiris free kick to give the USA the lead after 15 minutes, before Zavier Gozo put home a feed from Taha Habroune in the 26th minute to send the side into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Habroune got on the score sheet himself in the 58th minute, before substitute Marcos Zambrano finished a nice feed from Sergio Oregel in the first minute of second-half stoppage time to cap the scoring at 4-0.
With two wins from their first two matches, the USA now only need only a draw with Costa Rica in their group finale on Thursday, July 25, to claim top spot in Group A.
