Enugu Rangers have announced the appointment of Benedict Ugwu as caretaker coach in place of Gbenga Ogunbote, whose contract with the club has expired.
Rangers general manager Davidson Owumi said former international defender Ugwu will be in charge of the team for pre-season.
Rangers will feature in the 2020 CAF Confederation Cup.
“There is no room for any vacuum and Ugwu has shown through his actions and technical contributions that he has what it takes to lead our team on a care-taker basis,” Owumi said.
“As a senior national team player, Benedict distinguished himself. As a player of Rangers, he was full of the ‘Never Say Die’ spirit.
“Even when he took his game overseas, he was a great ambassador of club and country. When he came back, he showed some great stuff with the feeder team.
“It is the belief of management that he has what it takes to guide us before a substantive technical adviser comes around.”
‘Surugede’ played for 10 years for the ‘Flying Antelopes’ during which time he won the FA Cup in 1983 and 1984.
He also played for BCC Lions, El Kanemi Warriors and 3SC.
He has coaching badges from the NIS and CAF.
