Cyriel Dessers provided an assist for Genk to snatch a draw at Standard Liege, while Paul Onuachu missed some big chances on the opening day of league action in Belgium.
Transfer-target Onuachu started the game, while Dessers replaced his fellow Super Eagles striker in the 62nd minute for Genk.
Home team Standard took the lead in the 69th minute, before Genk salvaged a point in stoppage time thanks to Dessers assist.
An excited Dessers spoke after the first game of the new season: “We played well in the first period, but you let Standard live by missing those opportunities.
“After the break you see that they can also play very well and then it becomes difficult.
“I didn’t get to the ball much in the first 15 minutes of my substitute, but after that it got better and better. I went a little lower to get the ball and I am also very happy with my decisive assist. I can build on this again.”
Onuachu has failed to score in Genk two official games thus far – the Belgium Super Cup and now the league opener.
