This past season, Leon Balogun won his first major trophy in Europe when Rangers won the Scottish league after such a long wait.
The reward for this milestone was he enjoyed a year’s contract extension with Ibrox giants till June 2022 with option for an additional year to be taken only by the club.
He made 19 appearances in the Scottish Premier League and provided three assists.
He was also a key player having made eight appearances as Rangers reached the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League.
“Leon has been a consistent performer for me this season and has played a key role in strengthening our defence,” Rangers boss Seven Gerrard praised.
“His professionalism is obvious both on the field and in the dressing room as well. He is a role model for other players and has been a very positive influence within the squad.
“Although he is now 32, he can clearly continue to have a key influence in our squad for another year. I know that he is still ambitious to become a better version of himself and I know he is hungry for more success.”
Balogun said he is proud to stay put at the Scottish champions.
“I am proud to be a part of this amazing club and I felt that pretty early on I had fallen in love with the club and the working environment, the way the players and the management staff work and the way the club is a big family, I am happy and proud that I can call myself a Rangers player,” he said.
The Super Eagles star is a classy central defender, but his career whether for club or country has not been helped by injuries.
His absence in the national team has allowed for other players like Chidozie Awaziem to push for starting spots, but if he were fit he will be one of the first names on Gernot Rohr’s team sheet.
