Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is convinced that Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu will solve his problems at left back and so agreed for the player to train with the team in London during the forthcoming invitational tournament in London.
In his first match in charge of the Super Eagles, the former Mali supremo brought on Bruno Onyemaechi for Ola Aina at left back in the 67th minute against Rwanda in Kigali.
Against Zimbabwe in Uyo a few days later, the coach again preferred to start Ola Aina at leftback, while Bright Osayi-Samuel started at right back.
Onyemechi was an unused sub.
“He did not impress the coach in Rwanda,” a top source simply informed SCORENigeria
This would explain why the coach going to such great length for Agu to choose Nigeria ahead of Germany.
This season, Agu scored three goals and made an assist in 25 games across all competitions.
He is right footed but plays mainly as a left back and he could also play on the left side of midfield as well as a right back.
He is the only player to win three penalties in the Bundesliga this past season.
His current Transfermarkt value is Six Million Euros.
He has already been capped once by Germany at U21 level, but that was as far back as 2019.
He is highly rated by the Super Eagles coach and that explains why an arrangement was made for him to only train with the squad for the Unity Cup in London to see whether he will be able to fit into the set-up going forward.
Agu was born in Germany to a Nigerian father and does not have much Nigerian connection and so the reason to integrate him softly into the group.
Thereafter, it will be left for both the player and the coach to decide whether he could then change his international allegiance to Nigeria.
The bigger picture is for him to be available for the Super Eagles for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September and October.
