Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has explained why he started Victor Boniface from the bench in a 4-0 home win over Bochum this week.
He said he started an experimental team as part of preparation for next month when the AFCON will begin and he will be without as many as five African players including Victor Boniface.
“I think it wasn’t a risk. I don’t take any risks in a Bundesliga game,” said Xabi Alonso on his starting XI against Bochum. “Of course it was a test, but not a risk.
“Of course it’s not an ideal situation, but we have to deal with it.
“It was preparation for what lies ahead in January. But I have faith.”
Leverkusen finished top of the Bundesliga for 2023 as they remain unbeaten in a record 25 matches.
They are four points ahead of defending champions Bayern Munich, who will be expected to mount a stiff challenge in the New Year in quest to retain their championship.
