Tolu Arokodare scored his 21st goal of the season at Gent as if Genk had won the Belgian league.
But after topping the regular season, Genk disappointed in the Championship Playoffs and will now most likely finish in third place.
Fans therefore wondered why Arokodare enjoyed his late goal in a 4-1 victory over hosts Gent.
The striker himself provided the answer.
“To those who messaged me asking why I celebrated so much after we lost the title,” he began on his Instagram account.
“You can’t understand the feeling of scoring for your family who are coming to watch you in Europe for the first time,” the top scorer continued.
“Scoring for my father who gave everything for me to be here, for my brothers who supported me from the beginning and for my cousin who came all the way from the United States to see me play for the first time ever.”
“Nobody could have stopped me from celebrating like that with my family. I’m so happy that I was able to score and that they were there to enjoy that moment with me,” he concluded.
Tolu is virtually certain to finish the season as top scorer in the Jupiler Pro League. He scored as many goals as Adriano Bertaccini (STVV), but the Nigerian scored more away from home, which gives him the advantage
Pro League regulations stipulate that in the event of a tie between goal scorers, the player with the most away goals is declared the winner.
Arokodare has netted 13 of his 21 goals away from home, while the Belgian Bertaccini has scored eight goals on the road.
