Both the Super Falcons and South Africa have been talking tough leading up to today’s Titanic Paris 2024 Olympics playoff in Abuja.
Nigeria have dominated the Banyana Banyana until recently as the South Africans have gone on to be crowned champions of Africa for the first time two years ago.
Four-time CAF Coach of the Year Desiree Ellis said the more driven team will carry the day.
“Anyone who thinks because South Africa beat Nigeria in Aisha Buhari Cup and WAFCON in Morocco then it is given that we have Nigeria’s numbers is not sincere about the dynamics of the game of football makes it unpredictable,” she insisted.
“For this reason, we will approach the match with all seriousness because if you make a mistake you will be punished.”
She continued: “We are aware of the danger the Super Falcons pose to opponents with the array of star players they parade hence it will be unwise for us to underrate them.
“It is going to be a 50-50 chance and the side that is hungrier will carry the day”.
Her Nigerian counterpart, Randy Waldrum, said he will accept a home win no matter how slim even after joking about a 9-0 victory.
“As a team, the focus is getting the result first and foremost,” he said.
“If that’s 1-0 result, we will take it.
“Obviously, the more goals we score, the larger the result we get, the better for us.”
He admitted the danger that could be caused by the Banyana strike force led by captain Thembi Kgatlana, but at the same time expressed confidence for his team to get the job done at home.
Kick-off today is 5pm at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
