Should the appointment of a new Super Eagles coach continue to be placed on hold, the NFF will be forced to engage a caretaker coach at least for next month’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
The Super Eagles host Benin in Uyo on September 7, while they travel to Rwanda three days later.
As first reported by SCORENigeria, NFF technical department head Augustine Eguavoen is the favourite to be take temporary charge of these two qualifiers in the event a substantive coach has not been named.
The former Super Eagles captain is no stranger to being an emergency coach for the national team.
He was in interim charge of the team to the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon after Gernot Rohr was sacked.
However, he may no longer be interested in the position and his return will not be popular with the fans.
Heartland FC newly appointed coach Emmanuel Amuneke will also rank high among the candidates to take temporary control of the national team.
He was only recently shortlisted as substantive coach of the team after he was drafted as an assistant to Eguavoen two years ago for a 2022 World Cup playoff against Ghana.
Daniel Amokachi was also shortlisted to lead the national team in the first process that produced Finidi George to succeed Jose Peseiro in May.
Salisu Yusuf has also served as caretaker coach of the Super Eagles, so also Samson Siasia, whose FIFA ban is up this month.
Both coaches’ promising record has been blemished by bans to do with ethics.
They have also not been in close touch with the national team for the past three years.
