Today, Olympic champions Canada came from behind to beat debutants Republic of Ireland 2-1 to shoot to the top of Super Falcons Group B of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Courtesy of this win, Canada have four points, while co-hosts Australia are on three points after their opening day victory against the Irish.
Ireland have effectively been sent packing from the tournament despite a spirited performance against the Canadians today.
The Super Falcons will hope for at least a draw with Australia tomorrow morning (kick-off time 11am in Nigeria) to stay in serious contention for a place in the knockout rounds of the competition that will feature only the top two teams from each of the eight groups.
There is no provision for Third Best Losers through which the Falcons reached the Round of 16 at the 2019 World Cup in France.
A loss to the Aussies does not eliminate them as victory over Republic of Ireland in their final group game on July 31, while hoping for a favourable result between Australia and Canada same day, could still keep them alive in Down Under.
