Victor Boniface has been linked with a transfer away from Bayer Leverkusen, but he has now said he does not plan to quit the German club in this transfer window.
In an interview with Sport Bild, the Super Eagles striker made it clear he is staying at the German Bundesliga club.
“My future is here. From my perspective, it is one hundred percent clear that I will stay,” he said.
“I have three years left on my contract, I want to win titles with Leverkusen and have a fantastic season.”
He also revealed that he had an open dialogue with sports director Simon Rolfes even when his form faltered last season.
“I told him I love this. The transfer in January never happened. It happened as it happened. I’m staying,” he said.
Victor Boniface, who is entering his third season with Leverkusen, highlights the relationship with fellow striker Patrik Schick, whom the club also want to extend.
“Do you remember the 4-3 match against Stuttgart? We played together and it was one of the best performances of the season. Patrik is a very good friend. We push each other every day,” he recalled.
Boniface explained that he previously played in a deeper role or on the wing, both in Belgium and in Leverkusen, and that he is happy to adapt.
Despite several key players leaving Leverkusen this summer – such as Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Florian Wirtz – he is still confident about the future.
“Of course I miss my friends. The coach and some of his assistants and several players have left. But we have also brought in good players and a fantastic coach in Erik ten Hag,” he said.
“There is always movement in football. Some come, some go. It’s completely normal.”
