The Super Eagles may be the underdogs going into tonight’s 2019 AFCON semifinal against Algeria, but William Ekong said he expects them to rise to the occasion on their way to going all the way to be crowned African champions again.
“Algeria are the best team of the tournament, so it will be a difficult game, but we do well when we are the underdogs because we want to prove something,” said the Udinese central defender.
“If we hadn’t met them now, we would probably have met them in the final.
“We have to beat the best team to win the tournament.”
Ekong’s central defence partner, Kenneth Omeruo, was equally bullish ahead of this epic clash.
“We have to take our chances and be tactically disciplined because they know how to score goals and are a good and skillful team,” he said.
Ola Aina added that the Eagles will fight to reach the final.
“It will be an interesting game. They have some top players and they score goals but against Cote d”ivoire, they also showed they can play dirty,” the Torino defender said.
“It will be a tough game for sure and so we have to knuckle down to get the best result.”
