Ta Kurt Om El Mahag
Today we know about baseball that originated in Europe. But we do not know about its African predecessor which almost completely resembles it. This was called Ta Kurt Om El Mahag. The Barber tribes who inhabited the Libyan desert used to play this. As per popular beliefs, during the Stone Age, the game got transported to Europe where it became baseball.
Nguni or stick fighting
It is a kind of martial art. The Nguni herders in South Africa had very strong roots of this game in their cultural history and they used to ace it. It is a kind of simple stick fighting but it can last for as long as five hours at a stretch. The opponent participants take turns in playing offense and defense positions and score points based on which part of the body is struck. So, it is a violent sport and involves quite a lot of bloodshed. In fact, as history says, sometimes opponents might even end up dying. But true supporters of the sport do not take into consideration such criticisms saying it is a part of expressing their culture that needs a special kind of skill, lifestyle and strong physique. It is legally banned in South Africa but some natives still play it.
Donkey Racing
It originated in a Kenyan island called Lamu and is still one of the most popular sports there. The speciality of this island is the total absence of cars or any other such means of transport. So, the island’s administration organizes this annual race of donkeys. It is such an unique event that it has become a major site of tourism over the years. Thousands of people come to watch it thereby generating enough revenue for the small country. Seeing donkeys that have been extremely well-trained by jockeys with saddles on them is an exciting scene to watch. However, it is not a new sport. It traces back its origin to centuries ago on this same island. Moreover, it is no easy sport and demands a lot of skills. These skills are transferred from one generation to the next of the people who live here.
