A top NFF official has made a damning admission as regards the country’s U23 team who are on the brink of exiting the qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics – selfish officials have made dubious call-ups and team selection for cash.
The Nigeria U23s were held to a scoreless draw at home by Guinea with the return leg fixed for Tuesday in Morocco.
The overall winners of this playoff will advance to this year’s U23 AFCON to be hosted by Morocco, which will also determine the African representatives to next year’s Olympics in Paris.
The top official told SCORENigeria: “How can you explain how players from a non-league team in England of the fifth division in Portugal will now be playing for Nigeria at this level?
“These team officials have only allowed their self-interests to overtake their better judgment.
“There is just no other way you can explain what we are seeing as it concerns this team even if it is difficult to prove this.”
He continued: “How do you explain a coach changing players before half time or those players who started were forced on him?
“Is it that he does not know the players or what?”
The official further lamented the absence of a NFF Technical Sub-Committee, which ought to have vetted the list of players invited to the various national teams.
“The Technical Committee, which would have independently questioned these dubious call-ups, has not sat for many, many years,” he said.
“So, who can ask questions as regards the suitability or otherwise of those invited?”
