Daniel Akpeyi has been recalled for next month’s AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone to set the tone for a fresh battle of Super Eagles goalkeepers against Maduka Okoye.
South African club Kaizer Chiefs confirmed Akpeyi’s invitation for the AFCON qualifiers, first in Benin City on November 13 with the return leg in Freetown four days later.
He is one of six players for international duty from Kaizer Chiefs.
This month, coach Gernot Rohr overlooked Akpeyi for friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia so as to take a much closer look at Sparta Rotterdam shot stopper Maduka Okoye.
Rohr said he was impressed with Okoye and it now looks like a straight fight with Akpeyi, who was first choice at last year’s AFCON in Egypt.
Cyprus-based Francis Uzoho, who was No 1 at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, has struggled for game time since his return from a long-term injury.
