The Super Eagles have come under heavy fire after they capitulated 4-0 to hosts Portugal in a friendly played in Lisbon.
Thursday’s thrashing was the heaviest defeat for the three-time African champions since they crashed 5-1 to the Netherlands in another friendly on June 5, 1998.
“The Eagles were too poor on the night,” lashed out Francis Sule, a furious fan.
“Thank God we are not going to the World Cup. The disgrace would have been bigger.”
“There was no discipline in the team, see what happened when Emmanuel Denise refused to allow (William) Ekong to take the penalty,” added Sunday Dashe.
“This was a national shame.
“There is nothing like a friendly match, we ought to have taken the game more seriously.”
“I was disappointed by the performance of the team, we have lost it and it will take a long time for us to come back to the top,” further admitted former international Ifeanyi Udeze.
“Super Eagles have degenerated so badly,” lamented sports journalist Ayo Adesanya.
“The earlier something is done to avoid a total collapse.
“This is a case of something must be done now and quickly too!”
He added that the penalty drama involving Emmanuel Dennis and skipper William Ekong showed a leadership deficit in the national team.
“There is no direction and leadership from the top the reason Dennis did what he did,” he said.
“Until we get the right leadership, we are in serious trouble.”
“It was a very, very poor performance by the Super Eagles, not just because of the scoreline, but I couldn’t see the strategy of the team,” said former Nigeria captain Sylvanus Okpala, who also worked as assistant coach of the national team.
