FCT Football Association chairman Adam Mouktar Mohammed has sounded an early warning that contrary to widely held belief the Super Eagles have a battle in their hands if they were to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The road to Qatar 2022 will take a huge step in June with two rounds of group games.
Nigeria are drawn in the same group with Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia.
The winners of this mini-league group will join nine other group winners for the final playoff to be played on a knockout basis and which will produce five African representatives to Qatar 2022.
“World Cup qualification will be tough for the Super Eagles start from June when the clubs in Europe will be off season,” Mouktar Mohammed cautioned on AIT flagship programme Kakaaki.
“If my memory serves me well, the Eagles have often struggled in June when their clubs in Europe are on break.
“Also, we will have to pray for the luck of the draw should we get to the final playoffs as teams like Senegal, Egypt, Morocco and Algeria are flying at the moment.”
Mouktar Mohammed said he hopes the Nigerian spirit will also come to play for the Eagles to be champions again at the AFCON in Cameroon.
The AFCON in Cameroon will be Nigeria’s 20th appearance at the tournament and they have won it thrice.
