The South African sports minister has accused Morocco of holding Africa hostage over the hosting of the 2026 WAFCON.
He also said South Africa will be ready to host the competition at short notice.
Morocco is scheduled to stage this year’s WAFCON, which will also serve as qualifiers for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, from March 17.
“If Morocco is not ready to host the WAFCON, South Africa is ready to host the WAFCON…,” declared sports minister Gayton Mckenzie.
“Why is women’s football being treated with levity?
“I am saying that we will not be held hostage, because they want to embarrass Dr Motsepe (a fellow South African).”
CAF through their communications director will make a pronouncement on the situation surrounding the WAFCON latest tomorrow.
