After a difficult time in the German Bundesliga last season when he managed only a goal in a dozen appearances for Mainz 05, the Liverpool loanee has found his bearing with new club Union Berlin this term.
The 23-year-old striker has so far scored five goals as Union Berlin are punching above their weight in the German top flight.
His goals have come in his last seven games.
Last season, Union Berlin finished 11th on the 18-team Bundesliga table.
They will be expected to improve on that position this season thanks in part to the goals of Awoniyi, whose red-hot form came at a time the club were missing several strikers.
This can only be good news for a club, who only bounced back to the Bundesliga after languishing in the lower league between 1990 and 2019.
This will be Awoniyi’s seventh loan deal since he signed for Liverpool in 2015 and he himself has admitted he has hoped to play for his parent club and if that was not possible, a permanent transfer to afford his young family a home and some stability.
Could Union Berlin eventually be his permanent club?
