The young goalkeeper came from almost nowhere to grab the Super Eagles No 1 shirt from the injured Francis Uzoho despite limited appearances at his clubs.
However, young giant Okoye has used his country’s national team to announce himself to the rest of the world.
From playing Regionnaliga football in Germany, Okoye has fully firmed his massive frame in the Dutch Eredivisie between the sticks for Sparta Rotterdam and he has since continued to justify his selection.
The shot stopper began 2020 with a 90-minute action for Fortuna Dusseldorf ll in the German fourth-tier football tie at Bonner SC, which ended in a 2-2 draw on January 26.
A further game for his German side was his contribution in 2020 before Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam grabbed him to kick start his very promising career across the border.
He has thus far made eight appearances for his Dutch to bring his total outings for the year under review to 12, including two games for Sparta’s second team in the Dutch lower division.
He now has five caps for the Super Eagles after his unforgettable debut in place of the injured Uzoho against mighty Brazil in 2019.
