A report by the leading German newspaper Bild has said UEFA have decided to throw out Spartak Moscow, who parade former Super Eagles star Victor Moses, from the Europa League as part of their sanctions against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.
UEFA and Western Europe in general have come down hard on Russia for this unprovoked attack on a sovereign nation.
And the latest sanction is that Spartak Moscow, who are the only Russian club still in a European club competition this season, have now been expelled on that account, according to Bild.
Spartak were billed to take on RB Leipzig of Germany in the Round of 16 of the Europa League. The two legs were slated for March 10 and 17.
ByUEFA’s decision, RB Leipzig will now advanced straight to the quarter-finals, as no other team is being fished out to replace Spartak.
Leipzig did not confirm the decision, but are hinting in the same direction.
“We remain in close contact with UEFA and have full confidence in their decision. We assume that the matches will be cancelled,” said Oliver Mintzlaff on behalf of the club.
