Rivers Angels were unlucky not to reach the knockout rounds of the CAF Women’s Champions League despite smashing four goals past Kenya’s Vihiga Queens in a final group game, according to coach Edwin Okon.
Needing a big win to advance to the next round of the competition on Friday, Rivers Angels produced an emphatic second-half performance to put four past the Kenyan team for a 4-0 rout, but their destiny was not in their hands as Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa failed to beat Morocco’s ASFAR Club in the other last group game, which ended 0-0.
Forward Vivian Ikechukwu scored a brace from the penalty spot, while Damilola Koku and Gift Monday registered a goal each to complete the rout for Rivers Angels.
Rivers Angels thus finished third in Group B with three points as Mamelodi Sundowns and ASFAR Club finished winners and runners-up respectively to make it to the final four.
Koku was named Woman of The Match.
Rivers Angels thus finished third in Group B with three points as Mamelodi Sundowns and ASFAR Club finished 1st and 2nd respectively to make it to the final four “The team are not as bad as people say, it was just luck not being on our side, especially in our second group game against Mamelodi Sundowns,” Okon said.
“We however told ourselves that we weren’t going to crash out of the competition without redeeming our image and I’m glad with this achievement.”
he added: “Lessons have been learnt from this tournament and we’ll be going back home to work on this ahead of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Women Football League Premiership season, which kicks off next month because we still want to pick the next ticket to the second edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.”
