The Nigerian Presidency is monitoring with keen interest the troubles surrounding the Super Eagles 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign just as NFF president Ibrahim Gusau has drummed up support for his highly criticised administration.
After reaching the 2023 AFCON final four months ago, the Super Eagles are now in serious danger of not qualifying for the World Cup back-to-back.
They are second from bottom with three points from four matches.
President Bola Tinubu is believed to be mulling setting up a special Task Force to supervise the remainder of the Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers.
This will be a clear vote of no confidence on the NFF.
Under-fire NFF president Gusau has therefore used the Kano FA Awards night to touch base with a good number of NFF congress delegates, who attended the event.
A roll call of the state FA chairmen in Kano included those of Adamawa, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kwara, Kano, Gombe, Borno, Kaduna, Jigawa, Yobe and Lagos.
President of the Nigerian coaches association, Ladan Bosso, was also at the event.
In a heart-to-heart meeting with the state FA chairmen, Gusau was very emotional and opened up on the many challenges almost two years in office.
He said major sponsors have taken flight and the pressure is mounting from the Federal Government for them to deliver results even in the face of dwindling finances.
Failure for Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 World Cup will extinguish any hopes of a second term for Gusau.
The next NFF elections will be in September 2026.
