Football is one of the fastest-growing sports in Nigeria, with millions of fans passionately following the game. The popularity of football is also strengthened by the betting industry, with sportsbooks offering incentives such as the 1xbet bonus while registering online. It has driven higher levels of engagement and excitement around the sport. While many fans are familiar with the current football stars, they often know little about the legendary players who once played for the national team and have moved on to new chapters after retiring from football.

Kingsley Obiekwu

Kingsley Obiekwu, once a stalwart defender for Nigeria, has faced significant post-retirement struggles. Part of the victorious U-23 team that won Africa’s first football gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games, Obiekwu’s life took a surprising turn when he became a taxi driver.

The revelation shocked many Nigerians, sparking discussions on the need for better financial management and support for retired athletes. His story is a stark reminder of the uncertainties that can follow even the most celebrated sports careers.

Sam Sodje

Sam Sodje, now 45, has done well for himself after retiring from football. Born in England to Nigerian parents, Sodje played five games for the Nigerian national team.

After playing, he moved into coaching, earning levels 1 and 2 coaching certifications. Sodje also runs a company in Nigeria that leases construction machinery, showing how he has successfully transitioned to a new career.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni

Yakubu Aiyegbeni, born November 22, 1982, is a former Nigerian striker who works as a football agent. Known simply as Yakubu, he scored 96 goals in over 250 Premier League matches for clubs like Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers, making him the fourth-highest African goalscorer in Premier League history.

He netted 21 goals in 58 games for Nigeria, ranking him the third-highest scorer on the national team.

After retiring, Yakubu founded Wilbury Sports Management, helping young footballers and coaches. He also invests in the petroleum and hospitality industries.

Joseph Yobo

Joseph Yobo had a distinguished career with the Nigerian national team, earning 101 caps, making him one of Nigeria’s most capped players. He played in three World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, captaining Nigeria to their 2013 AFCON victory. At the club level, Yobo spent a significant part of his career at Everton, where he became one of the club’s most reliable defenders.

After retiring from football, Yobo has transitioned into coaching and football development. He was appointed an assistant coach for the Nigerian national team, bringing his experience and knowledge to the next generation of Super Eagles players.

Wilson Oruma

Wilson Oruma, born on December 30, 1976, is a former Nigerian midfielder who played most of his career in France. Oruma, who captained the national under-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, to victory at the Japan 93 cadet World Cup, faced a tough time after being reportedly defrauded by a clergyman and some fake oil businessmen.

In 2018, six years after losing nearly ₦2 billion, Oruma suffered from severe emotional and mental health issues. Thankfully, with the help of some former teammates, he received the support he needed.

Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu is one of Nigeria’s most iconic footballers, having played for European clubs such as Ajax, Inter Milan, and Arsenal. Known for his skill and versatility, Kanu was instrumental in Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic gold medal win and played a key role in the Super Eagles’ journey to the Round of 16 in the 1998 World Cup.

After retirement from professional football, Kanu has remained active in the sport, focusing on philanthropy. He established the Kanu Heart Foundation, which aims to help children with heart defects. Additionally, Kanu serves as an ambassador for various football and health-related initiatives.

Final Thoughts

The diverse post-retirement experiences of Nigeria’s football legends underscore the challenges and opportunities that come with leaving the sport. While some have found success in new ventures, others face significant hardships.
