Victor Osimhen has revealed that he apologised to the Super Eagles after he missed a sitter that would have won Nigeria the 2026 World Cup Playoffs tie against Gabon in regulation time.
In stoppage time, Osimhen came face-to-face with the Gabon goalkeeper after he was set up by a superb through ball by Ndidi, but incredibly he misdirected his shot away from target.
“I first told them that I am sorry and then I promised that I was going to correct it in extra time,” he told Cali Sports.
“I’m happy that I did it, and kudos to my teammates who have me the assists to score the two goals.
“I’m also happy about the mentality of the team, all of us.”
Osimhen said as a striker he has scored some great goals just as he has also missed some big chances, but his mentality has kept him going.
“As a striker, some times I score a goal that no one believes, but I could also lose the one that people think I’m going to score. That doesn’t take away what I can do,” he said.
“I always have the mentality that even if I miss a good opportunity so long as the game is going on, I will try to correct it by still scoring later.”
