Cyriel Dessers and Rangers will next Wednesday have to overturn a 3-1 home loss they suffered at the hands of Club Brugge for them to reach the money-spinning group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
On Tuesday night at Ibrox, injured Dessers was missing as Club Brugge, parading Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika, raced to a three-goal lead after just 20 minutes, before the home team pulled a goal back early in the second half.
Dessers, whose father is Belgian, will hope to be fit for him to play a part in Rangers fight back in Belgium next week.
The overall winners of this playoff will advance to the group phase of the Champions League, while the losers will drop to the second-tier UEFA Europa League.
