Onuachu - To stay or not to stay at Genk?

Paul Onuachu is firing again from last season and experts predict more goals in important games could finally cause the striker to make a long-awaited transfer soon.

This will come after overseas clubs made the “transfer blunder” of not signing the 27-year-old striker this past summer.

With nine goals in eight official matches, Onuachu is back on track and on Thursday he has to guide Genk past Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Europa League.

If the Goal King and reigning Professional Footballer of the Year also shone in the Europa League, a winter transfer will not be far away.

Genk, who still demanded a high 30 Million Euros during the summer transfer window for the player, will undoubtedly sell the striker for a good price.

Onuachu only recently signed an improved contract at Genk until mid-2024.

In his weekly column for Het Nieuwsblad René Vandereycken said he believes that both player and club will soon be celebrating a big transfer.

“If Onuachu continued to perform as he does now, there may be interest from more and more clubs and there may be a better price for Genk,” said the former national team coach.

“It remains to be seen whether that will happen next winter or at the end of the season.”

Analyst Filip Joos said clubs outside of Belgium made a blunder by overlooking Onuachu.

“Apparently no one really had enough interest in him. I cannot understand. For a team like say Crystal Palace, he can be invaluable. If you compared him with (Christian) Benteke, then why not?” he asked.

Sports/Voetbalmagazine said if Onuachu could score some goals in a Europa League group game against Premier League side West Ham, he could be on the move by January.

“If Onuachu also hands over his business card (goals), he will be gone in January,” the magazine predicted.
