Kenneth Omeruo has revealed he took a pay cut of as much as 50% to stay put at relegated CD Leganes to get them back to La Liga.
He said it is a decision that he believes will pay off in the long run.
“I have had to take a salary cut of 50% to stay back at Leganes (after relegation from La Liga last season),” Omeruo told SCORENigeria in an interview in Abuja today.
“It was a decision I had to think a lot about.
“Leganes have made me feel at home since I joined them two years ago. At Chelsea, I was always being loaned out.
“It was therefore only fair that I risk at least a year in the second division with them to try and get back to La Liga.
“The club will appreciate me even more when we get back to the top league.”
Omeruo also said he is confident Leganes, who are now third in the standings in the Segunda Division, will make it back to the top league at the end of the season.
“Definitely we will be back to La Liga,” he declared.
“We have an amazing team, who play good football, but we have been unlucky some of the time and the Segunda Division is really tough.”
