The profile of former youth international, Obinna Nwobodo, has continued to rise as it has been revealed that he is top of the statistics charts in the Turkish Super Lig this season.
Data collated from all the matches played so far show that Nwobodo is number one in all three vital defensive departments that were considered after 23 rounds of the championship.
In a report by the Turkey arm of international media outlet, beiNSPORTS, the ex-Rangers of Enugu linchpin was credited with 220 tackles (best in the league), winning the ball 92 times (best in the league) and 94 steals (winning the ball) in the opponents half without loss of the ball, which is also the best by any player in the league.
These top statistics by the defensive midfielder made beiNSPORTS to dub him “Göztepe’s Secret Hero”.
After a poor start, Goztepe won their last four games to swim out of the relegation zone as the league went on break for 12 days.
They conceded three goals and scored 10 and when they resume the campaign with a local derby against Altay on Sunday February 6, the fans of the ‘Red and Yellow’ will be looking to another battling performance from Nwobodo if the team are to continue winning.
It can be recalled that after what was only his first season in the Turkish Super Lig, Nwobodo emerged the best tackler in the whole league with 66 tackles. This was in the 2020/2021 season.
In the current campaign, he has more than surpassed that with 220 already and with a third of the season yet to be played.
The 25 year-old Nwobodo has featured in 21 of Göztepe’s 23 games this term.
