NFF president Amaju Pinnick has effectively ended the Super Eagles brief romance with Jose Peseiro with his declaration the Portuguese coach is free to take up another job.
Pinnick told Channels TV the NFF have yet to seal a contract with Peseiro and discussions of a deal have stalled because of “circumstances”.
“I am still talking to him (Peseiro), maybe he has to wait till after the World Cup qualifiers (vs Ghana),” the NFF president said.
“If in the course of his waiting, he got another job, we wish him well.
“The good news is that we did not sign the contract officially.
“We don’t want to rush and make a hasty decision considering the circumstances.
“We have to do what is best for the nation.
“And we work in harmony with the sports ministry, which represents the government.”
The statements by Pinnick have given the strongest hint yet that Augustine Eguavoen will lead the Super Eagles for the World Cup final playoffs against arch-rivals Ghana.
The playoffs will be played between March 21 and 29 with the overall winners advancing to this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
