Ibrahim Gusau has resigned as president of the NFF to bring to an inglorious end a disastrously failed term in charge of Nigerian football.
In his four years as NFF president, Nigeria failed to qualify for both the men and women’s World Cups, while the country’s age-grade teams, once admired for their exploits internationally, also struggled to impress.
The executive committee he headed has equally been dissolved as the majority of the members have also thrown in the towel after initial denials.
An interim administration is now expected to be appointed to totally re-organise both the NFF Congress and the secretariat.
Both the anti-corruption agencies as well as national security organisations are now investigating allegations of diversion of government funds running into billions of Naira.
A case in point is the 17 billion Naira bailout fund that President Bola Tinubu generously released to the NFF to clear outstanding bonuses and allowances of the Super Eagles, Super Falcons and Flying Eagles.
Many beneficiaries of this fund have maintained they are yet to paid more than two years after.
Observers now say they hope these investigations will lead to the prosecution of indicted officials as was not the case previously.
