Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football and he will now play his final match for Argentina against Benin.
Argentina will play friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso, and Benin in the coming weeks.
Messi, 39, will join the squad for that final match versus Benin on October 6 at El Monumental, River Plate’s stadium in Buenos Aires.
There, Messi can still say goodbye to the Argentine public on the pitch.
Moreover, he will be able to do so in the company of the teammates with whom he experienced his greatest success.
After all, the Argentine Football Federation have invited all players from the squad that won the world title in 2022. Naturally, a number of them are still part of the squad.
Messi looks set to collect a 208th cap. In doing so, he scored an impressive 125 goals and provided 68 assists.
In addition to a World Cup, he also won the Copa America twice with Argentina.
