German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 have said they would have loved to have signed Taiwo Awoniyi on a permanent basis, but Liverpool refused to lower their asking price for the striker.
Awoniyi played for Mainz 05 in the 2019/20 season on loan from Liverpool.
“He was in the market, but we couldn’t finance the deal,” revealed Mainz 05 sports director Christian Heidel.
“We talked about him, but I didn’t get a discount (from Liverpool).”
Mainzo 05 loss was Union Berlin gain as that was clear at the weekend when Awoniyi sunk his former club with the goals in a 2-1 win on the road.
Awoniyi has now scored 12 goals in all competitions – five in the Bundesliga – as well as made two assists.
