Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro has been appointed new coach of the Super Eagles to replace Gernor Rohr, who was fired recently.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced this appointment today with additional contract details of the new coach to be made public later.
“After a careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the technical sub-committee, the executive committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new head coach of the Super Eagles,” an official statement read in part.
The statement further said Peseiro will be at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon as “an observer”, while caretaker coach Austin Eguavoen leads the team.
“He is a top, top coach,” remarked NFF president Amaju Pinnick, who added Peseiro impressed during interviews for the top post.
Peseiro is due in Nigeria early in the New Year.
His immediate assignment is to qualify Nigeria to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in March.
The 61-year-old Peseiro, who was reportedly recommended by former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho, was until recently coach of Venezuela.
He has also handled Saudi Arabia and was between 2003 and 2004 assistant coach of Real Madrid under compatriot Carlos Quiroz.
His track record also included stints with Portuguese clubs Sporting Lisbon, Sporting Braga, FC Porto as well as African champions Al Ahly.
