The Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle will soon announce a final squad of 23 players for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa from a 31-man provisional squad.
Sources close to the coach informed SCORENigeria that one of the key considerations for the final selection will be the performance of the players listed on the provisional squad in their last two matches for their clubs leading up to the World Cup qualifiers.
Most of the players on the enlarged squad were in action this weekend.
Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray), Terem Moffi (Nice), Moses Simon (Paris FC) were on the scoresheet, while Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey (Fulham), Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest), Chidozie Awaziem (FC Nantes), Fisayo Dele-Bashiru (Lazio) were in action.
Strikers Sadiq Umar (Real Sociedad), Cyriel Dessers (Rangers), Ademola Lookman (Atalanta), Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen) did not see action.
Dessers is recovering from an ankle injury and did not make Rangers matchday squad vs St.Mirren, while Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface and Sadiq Umar are on the transfer market trying to sort out their club future.
Nigeria will welcome second-placed Rwanda to Uyo on September 6, before they do battle in South Africa three days later.
