Underdogs Guinea Bissau today toppled the Super Eagles at the top of a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Group A after they recorded a shock 1-0 win here.
Mama Samba Balde was the match winner for the visitors in the 29th minute, when he controlled a long ball, evaded his markers before he slotted past goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.
Guinea Bissau are now top of the qualifying group with seven points from three matches, while Nigeria dropped to second place on six points.
Sierra Leone are third on two points, while Sao Tome and Principe are bottom with a point.
The top two teams will qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup, which will be hosted by the Ivory Coast in January 2024.
The Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau were organised and resolute in defence, while the Super Eagles attack led by Napoli striker Victor Osimhen failed to deliver in front of goal despite the several chances they created especially in the second half.
FC Nantes winger Moses Simon, brought in for the ineffective Ademola Lookman at the start of the second half, missed a sitter on 56 minutes and moments later Osimhen was denied by the Guinea Bissau goalkeeper Jonas Mendes.
Samuel Chukwueze and substitute Paul Onuachu also wasted fine chances to at least draw Nigeria level.
Both teams will clash again Monday at the Estadio 24 de Setembro in Bissau in continuation of the qualifying series.
