Favour Daniel was the match winner for Nigeria when he pounced on a loose ball inside the box to hit target in the 77th minute.
Light Eke would have doubled this lead in the closing minutes of the encounter, but he failed to put away a penalty.
The Eaglets showed class in the first half, but failed to break the deadlock against a spirited Zambian side.
They will next take on their Moroccan counterparts Wednesday in a second Group B match.
Kick-off time will again be 5pm in Constantine.
