Noah Adedeji had already agreed personal terms with Belgian champions Club Brugge, but in the end he had to stay put at Genk.
Genk head of football Dimitri De Conde has now explained why that transfer did not happen.
“Club Brugge misjudged that dossier,” De Conde told HLN.
“If Club think they can pick up one of our top talents for six million euros, that is naive. Such an offer destroys the market value of players and also puts the player himself in a mentally difficult position.”
De Conde added: “I did ask Club for how much we should sell a talent, like the ones Genk develop? And I added: ‘Because we do that better than you.’ That is my angle, in such a situation. And it is true, too, because only five clubs worldwide have made more profit from their transfers in the last five years … I didn’t get an answer.”
He revealed that Genk were looking at 15 million euros for the player they had developed.
