Qatar: the new destination for the World Cup
The 22nd edition of the football World Cup is being held in Qatar and will last from 21 November to 18 December 2022. As on every occasion, it is organised by FIFA and brings together the best international teams. 32 countries from all continents are participating in this unique competition. They are selected following a pre-qualifying tournament on each continent. The final matches are scheduled for Qatar’s bank holidays and one week before the Christmas celebration. How is the first round of the finals conducted?
For the first round of eliminations, the teams are divided into 8 groups of 4 teams. Each football team plays a match against the other teams in its group. After the match, the top two winners from the four participating countries will qualify for the round of 16. The selection of the teams is based on a points system. All matches won are worth three points, draws only 1 point and failures 0 point.
How is the selection for the rest of the competition made?
In the round of 16, the qualification system is different. From now on, the first of a group (A) plays the second of its neighbouring group (B). The principle continues in all groups of football teams. All matches are knock-out, from the round of 16 stage to the grand final. In the event that the teams playing the match end up tied after the 90 minutes of play, they continue with 30 minutes of extra time divided into two parts of 15 minutes of play.
If the teams are still tied, then they both go to a penalty shoot-out. The winner goes through to the fourth final or the title depending on the case. Note that during extra time the coaches have the right to make a fourth player change if necessary. The World Cup is an international competition organised by FIFA. To have the privilege of participating in it, you need to train and, above all, be qualified. The appointment is made for Qatar 2022.
