A top team official has told SCORENigeria that the Flying Eagles are the team to beat at this year’s U20 AFCON after they made a bold statement with a win over hosts Egypt in a warm-up game.
The Flying Eagles beat the Young Pharaohs 2-1 with goals by Kparobo Arierhi and Precious Benjamin.
The team official said it was not just the victory, but the overall performance by the team.
“The boys are ready, they are a better team in general than the team of 2023 who finished third at the same competition,” he said.
“They played with so much spirit and determination to deserve the victory.
“The weather is similar to what we have in Nigeria and so the team have settled down very quickly.
“Several players have been brought in and they have added true value to the team who won the WAFU B in Togo last year.
“Egypt could not believe what the Flying Eagles delivered, I believe they are still in a shock.”
A happy coach Aliyu Zubairu praised the high intensity play by the boys against their Egyptian counterparts.
“We didn’t allow the Egyptians to play,” he said.
The Flying Eagles play their opening Group B match on Thursday, Many 1 against Tunisia before games against Morocco and Kenya.
