The Flying Eagles soared above the Satellites of Ghana 4-2 to get off to a great start at the WAFU B U20 AFCON qualifiers in Cote d’Ivoire, but coach Abdu Maikaba said his team could even have recorded a bigger win over their arch-rivals.
“Yes, actually, if you see the last 10 minutes of the game, we created about three full scoring opportunities, which we missed the target narrowly. And I believe our boys are so anxious to make it count. That is why they lost such opportunities,” Maikaba said after the opening Group B victory
“They would have been calm in front of goal and convert such chances. It would have been more than four.”
The Flying Eagles coach the target now is to beat Togo in their next game Thursday to secure qualification to the semifinals of the qualifying tournament.
“We have finished with the first game and the second game is going to be equally important because Togo are also not pushovers and it’s also a rivalry game between Nigeria and Togo,” he offered.
“We have to put our heads down, plan very well for Togo, make sure we get the second win that will qualify us to the semi-final.”
Togo fell 3-1 to Burkina Faso in their opening group game.
